Prayer of Confession

God, you bring us to your place of worship, hear us now as we admit our wrongs. We confess that we bring our personal business into this worship service and cannot stop thinking about things we need to do. Our minds and bodies, our whole attention, are focused on the coming break; thus, we are not fully focused on worshipping you. Forgive us, O God. You have called the church to be one body with many parts, yet we sever the body with our own selfish desires. Only by your mercy can we turn, fully, to you. Help us as a community, Merciful God, to be a whole body. Help us, Triune God, to see the error of our ways. Help us to quiet the other voices in our heads, so that we may hear only your voice. By your grace make us one in Christ. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

To all who turn from sin in sorrow; to all who turn to God in hope, This is God’s Word of grace: We are accepted, we are forgiven, we are loved. This gift we have from God.

Thanks be to God.

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

May God be with you.

And also with you.

Beloved of God, lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the One who knows us and loves us.

Beloved of God, give thanks to the Lord our God.

Our praise is continually offered to our Hope, our Trust, our God.

In that time when there was only You, you walked in the midst of chaos, shaping all that is good and beautiful. In that place where there was only your Love, You stretched out your hands scooping up the dirt off earth’s floors, shaping us in your image, breathing Spirit into our lungs. In that silence where there was only your Hope, you called us to be your people, God of Glory.

But the world sang of its seduction, sin called us to follow its despair, death blinded us to the life you offered. And so, we turned away, pouting and stamping our feet wanting our own way.

But you would not pay attention to our foolish tantrums, nor would you leave us in the grasp of death and sin, trusting that if we encountered the grace wrapped in your holiness, we would turn to you in joy.

And so, believing that you have reached out and called us to service with you, and touched our lips with songs of hope, we join our voices with those who, in every time and place, sing of your ways forever:

Holy are you, Sanctuary of our Hearts, and blessed is Jesus Christ, Word of joyous grace. In that time when we had lost our way, he called to us, so we could follow him into your joy; in that time when all hope had died, he touched our souls with the fire of your love; in that time when death’s cold grip wrapped tightly around our hearts, he came to surround us with your life. While we cannot understand the mysteries of your holiness and grace, when we are called to Christ’s side we can only cry, “Here we are; we will follow” even as we hope for that faith which was his. Great is the mystery of faith:

In this time of silence, Spirit of God, may this bread which is broken, become our wholeness. In this time of grace, may this cup which is poured touch our lips with healing. In this time when we feel the brush of your fingertips caressing us, may we believe that your justice and peace are to be shared with all people; that our hearts can bear the burdens of others; that we may bring joy to the lonely and hurting. Make us compassionate people, who have a passion for your justice. Through your Son, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory are yours, Great God, our Hope, our Peace, now and forever. Amen.

Grant them safe travel to and from their destination; openness to serve you through specific tasks and work projects that are needed; courage to do things that are new and that may test stamina and faith; willingness to meet, trust and work alongside of strangers; and wisdom to know when to call timeout and to rest from their labors. Bless and keep them close to you in all they do and be attentive to their silent and spoken prayers. In Jesus Name we pray. AMEN

Prayer of Confession

Holy and loving Creator, please forgive our ignorance. We confess that our arrogance gets in the way of worshipping you. We admit to taking this prayer as a checklist and ignoring it if we think it does not apply to our lives. And we acknowledge that often our head gets in the way of our hearts. Forgive our blindness Lord. Forgive our conscious and unconscious thoughts and actions that drive people away. Forgive us when those same thoughts or actions keep us from helping others. Help us Holy Parent, saving Christ, and soothing Spirit. Help us to see our own errors and admit them to you and to the world you have created. Help us God, help us.

Assurance of Pardon

In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are assured that there is no sin so terrible that God cannot forgive, no hurt so terrible that God cannot heal. God accepts, God forgives, and God sets free. Receive the forgiving love of God.

Call to Confession

In this holy place, we seek forgiveness so that we can once again be gathered in the wide embrace of God’s love and mercy. Let us confess our sins now.

Prayer of Confession

O God of shalom, you are sovereign over all our days. You are our strength when we are weak and our refuge when we are broken.

We confess that we build up walls to protect ourselves from the pain that can come with daily living, that those walls also shut us off from receiving your love and the love of others.

We confess that the busyness of our days covers up our deep need for you, that we are hungry and thirsty for your grace.

Forgive us, God of grace, when we neglect to acknowledge and rely upon your steadfast love.

Forgive us when we do not want to see you, or try stubbornly to do without you.

O loving God, break down our defenses, soothe our hearts, strengthen and nourish us so that we may grow closer to you. Help us to trust you, and give us the courage to rest in you.

Loving God, Mothering Spirit and Prince of Peace, you created us for life in community and relationship – with each other and with you. In your great love, you call us to love one another and to live in peace. But we go our own way. Where you desire love, we breed contempt. Where you desire peace, we wage war. Where you desire reconciliation, we nurse our grudges. Leaning into your mercy, we confess the many ways we shatter your peace:

Scripture tells us that John the Baptist came preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus proclaimed, “Repent and believe the good news!” As we prepare to hear the good news read and preached, let us confess our sins before God and one another.

Holy and Merciful God, in Jesus Christ you have shown us your great love for us. Yet we all, like sheep, have gone astray, each to our own way. Our thoughts have not been your thoughts; our ways have not been your ways. Turn us back to you, O God. In your grace, give us the strength to repent and to choose what is good. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image. When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, he made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death. Though tempted in every way as we are, yet he did not sin; so through him we may triumph over sin and grow in grace. In him you have made us a holy people. Therefore we proclaim your great and glorious name, praising you and saying:

Glory to you, Lord Christ; your death we show forth; your resurrection we proclaim.

Therefore loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we affirm this mystery of faith:

Loving God, blessing your name, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Suffering God, from the wondrous cross light spills into our world revealing places of deepest shadow where your justice and your peace wait to be realized. In this time of Lent we are especially conscious of those living in the shadow who look to you as their hope and their salvation against the horrors this world inflicts upon them. Hear us God:

We hunger for your justice. We thirst for your peace.

In the Philippines today, O God, hear the cries of the afflicted and victims of injustice, those marginalized, the poor peasants and workers and those of our people struggling to live out their faith as your witness in spreading the good news of love and peace here on earth; uplift and comfort them and stand in protection against all the evils of this world. Always be with us in solidarity with our people as we know you are the God of history, justice and freedom. Hear us God:

We hunger for your justice. We thirst for your peace.

Alleviate your people’s suffering, Lord, we pray, but also we know that it is from these places of darkness that your justice and your peace ultimately spring. Gracious and Holy One,

We come full of much that clutters and distracts us. Sometimes the events of our days stifle us, burden our hearts. Other times we are paralyzed by a gnawing dissatisfaction, or anxious imaginings. Then there are times when we are driven to settle old scores, or we are deceived by the arrogance of being right. So many different ways to lose our way! Forgive us, kind one. Empty us of that which is not of you, so that we may can receive that which you hold out for us.

I BELIEVE in God who made of one blood all races that dwell on earth. I believe that all people of all races are kin, varying, through Time and Opportunity, in form and gift and feature, but differing in no essential particular, and alike in soul and in the possibility of infinite development.

Especially do I believe in the Negro Race; in the beauty of its genius, the sweetness of its soul, and its strength in that meekness which shall yet inherit this turbulent earth.

I believe in pride of race and lineage and self; in pride of self so deep as to scorn injustice to other selves; in pride of lineage so great as to despise no one’s mother and father; in pride of race so chivalrous as neither to offer bastardy to the weak nor beg wedlock of the strong, knowing that all may be brothers and sisters in Christ, even though they be not brothers- and sisters-in-law.

I believe in the Prince of Peace. I believe that War is Murder. I believe that armies and navies are at bottom the tinsel and braggadocio of oppression and wrong; and I believe that the wicked conquest of weaker and darker nations by nations whiter and stronger but foreshadows the death of that strength.

I believe in Liberty for all people; the space to stretch their arms and their souls; the right to breathe and the right to vote, the freedom to choose their friends, enjoy the sunshine and ride on the railroads, uncursed by color; thinking, dreaming, working as they will in a kingdom of God and love.

I believe in the training of children black even as white; the leading out of little souls into the green pastures and beside the still waters, not for pelf or peace, but for Life lit by some large vision of beauty and goodness and truth; lest we forget, and generations that follow, like Esau, for mere meat barter their birthright in a mighty nation.

Finally, I believe in Patience -- patience with the weakness of the Weak and the strength of the Strong, the prejudice of the ignorant and the ignorance of the Blind; patience with the tardy triumph of Joy and the mad chastening of Sorrow -- patience with God.

Historical Notes for this Service

The prayers and readings in this worship service are drawn from the writings of prominent African-American scholars, theologians, and activists.

James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) was an important African-American writer, poet, and activist in the early 1900s. The Call to Worship and Confession in today’s service are drawn from what is one of his most well-known works, God’s Trombones, a book of poems that honors the traditions of African-American folk preaching. James Weldon Johnson also wrote the words for the hymn Lift Every Voice and Sing; his brother composed the music for that hymn.

W.E.B.DuBois (1868-1963) was one of the most important African-American scholars and activists of the early 20th century. Receiving degrees from both Fisk and Harvard Universities, DuBois advocated tirelessly for full equality for African Americans. His many accomplishments include helping to found the NAACP, writing extensively, and publishing many other African-American writers. DuBois’s life spanned an amazing stretch of American history – he was born just a few years after the Civil War and died on the day before Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream Speech” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Melva Wilson Costen is a present-day scholar, theologian, and historian, serving for many years as professor of Music and Worship at the Interdenominational Theological Center. Her “Classic African-American Folk Prayer” (1981) is her remembrance of African-American folk prayers she heard in church growing up. This, and other historic and contemporary African-American prayers can be found in James Melvin Washington’s, Conversations with God: Two Centuries of Prayers by African Americans (1994).

Call to Confession

Scripture Reading:  Isaiah 54:1-10 (from the Message)

"Sing, barren woman, who has never had a baby.
Fill the air with song, you who've never experienced childbirth!
You're ending up with far more children
than all those childbearing women." God says so!
"Clear lots of ground for your tents!
Make your tents large. Spread out! Think big!
Use plenty of rope, drive the tent pegs deep.
You're going to need lots of elbow room
for your growing family.
You're going to take over whole nations;
you're going to resettle abandoned cities.
Don't be afraid—you're not going to be embarrassed.
Don't hold back—you're not going to come up short.
You'll forget all about the humiliations of your youth,
and the indignities of being a widow will fade from memory.
For your Maker is your bridegroom,

Whose name is, God-of-the-Angel-Armies!
Your Redeemer is The Holy of Israel,
known as God of the whole earth.
You were like an abandoned wife, devastated with grief,
and God welcomed you back,
Like a woman married young
and then left," says your God.

Rise up, you people of God.

For we have been slumbering in exile.

Awake! Awake!

Clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of learning.

For God is calling us to return to our studies.

Shake off your dust!

Free yourself from the chains on your neck

For we will be the ones who bring good news,

Who proclaim peace,

Who bring good tidings,

Who proclaim salvation,

Who say to Zion, “Your God Reigns!”

Call to Confession

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, in your gracious presence we confess our sin and the sin of this world. Although Christ is among us as our peace, we are a people divided against ourselves as we cling to the values of a broken world. The profit and pleasures we pursue lay waste the land and pollute the seas. The fears and jealousies that we harbor set neighbor against neighbor and nation against nation. We abuse your good gifts of imagination and freedom, of intellect and reason, and have turned them into bonds of oppression. Lord have mercy upon us; heal and forgive us. Set us free to serve you in the world as agents of your reconciling love in Jesus Christ.

Assurance of Pardon

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ was raised for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. Amen

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another.
