Charles On Lazarus' Death

Morning Worship

San Francisco Theological Seminary

Montgomery Chapel

Welcome

*Call to Worship

Praise the Lord!

How good it is to sing praises to our God,

For God is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.

The Lord builds up Jerusalem and gathers the outcasts of Israel.

The Lord heals the brokenhearted, and binds their wounds.

The Lord determines the number of the stars, and gives to all of them their names.

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power,

God’s understanding is beyond measure.

Come, let us worship God. From Psalm 147

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Have mercy upon us, O God, according to your steadfast love. According to your abundant mercy, blot out our transgressions. Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before both us and you. Against you, you alone, have we sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment.

In your great mercy, O God, forgive us. Create in us clean hearts, and put in us a new and right spirit. Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore unto us the joy of your salvation, and sustain in us a willing spirit. Open our lips, O Lord, and our mouths will give you praise. Amen.

From Psalm 51

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, hear the Good News! As far as the east is from the west, so far has God removed our sins from us. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

God dwells in you.

And also in you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ver sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name:

(Sanctus & Benedictus)

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Creator of all. Jesus stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect self-offering for the whole world. Great is the mystery of faith:

(Memorial Acclamation)

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this offering of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Christ.

Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever. Amen.
