Morning Worship
“True wisdom and real power belong to God; from God we learn how to live, and also what to live for.” – Job 12:7
*Please stand, as you are able.
People please read the bold.
Welcome
Welcome to this morning’s worship. Welcome back returning students and welcome to those entering their first semester. May the blessing of God, the eternal goodwill of God, be among us and between us, now and always.
*Call to Worship
God calls us out of the silence, out of the darkness.
God brings hope to the hopeless, faith to the faithless.
God gives sight to the blind and brings healing to the sick.
God gives strength to the weak and life where no life exists.
God does all these things and more. The power of God is limitless, and God calls us to her. Let us worship God.
*Hymn STF 2218 You Are Mine
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we confess that often we are afraid and ignore your call, even when you call us by name. We have not always sought to walk in your light, but have chosen to walk in darkness. Sometimes we are silent when we should be speaking out, and we talk when we should be silent. At times we have forgotten those around us who need help and inspiration and we help ourselves instead of helping them. We confess that we try to break the bond that you have with us and all your children. Oh merciful God, forgive us. Help us to see the error of our ways; help us to recognize your power and our own weakness; help us to remember that we are your beloved children; and help us to listen for you and joyfully answer when you call us by name. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on us, pardon us and set us free. Know that we are forgiven and be at peace. God strengthen us in all goodness and keep us in life eternal. Amen.
*Passing of the Peace
Since Christ has forgiven us, let us forgive one another.
The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
And also with you.
1st Scripture Reading Job 12:1-12
Hymn VU 242 Let All Things Now Living
2nd Scripture Reading Job 12:13-25
True wisdom and real power belong to God; from God we learn how to live, and also what to live for. If God tears something down, it's down for good; if God locks people up, they're locked up for good. If God holds back the rain, there's a drought; if God lets it loose, there's a flood. Strength and success belong to God; both deceived and deceiver must answer to God.
God strips experts of their vaunted credentials, exposes judges as witless fools. God divests kings of their royal garments, then ties a rag around their waists. God strips priests of their robes, and fires high officials from their jobs. God forces trusted sages to keep silence, deprives elders of their good sense and wisdom. God dumps contempt on famous people, disarms the strong and mighty. God shines a spotlight into caves of darkness, hauls deepest darkness into the noonday sun. God makes nations rise and then fall, builds up some and abandons others. God robs world leaders of their reason, and sends them off into no-man's-land. They grope in the dark without a clue, lurching and staggering like drunks.
True wisdom and real power belong to God; from God we learn how to live, and also what to live for.
Prayers of the People
God calls us to be in community and sing and pray in one voice. Even though we may say different things, we all say one prayer; one prayer, many parts. So please end your prayers with “God in your grace” or “God in your mercy” and the community will respond with
“Here our prayer.”
The Lord’s Prayer
Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and test, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For your reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.
