Peter Preaches Attaining Resurrection

Morning Worship

San Francisco Theological Seminary

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Montgomery Chapel

Welcome

*Call to Worship

In the name of the Lord we have come,

Awaiting the living Word of God.

Women and Men, young and old, images of God.

God is wider than all our imagination ever will be.

God was before us,

God is with us,

God walks ahead of us,

Above and beyond all borders and walls built by us.

In God, we will overcome

Whatever keeps us apart.

Amen.

*Hymn VU #460 All Who Hunger

Prayer of Repentance

Lord, we and our sisters and brothers throughout the world have sinned against you and have harmed our fellow human beings.

We have come with penitent hearts to ask for your forgiveness.

We have disrespected and mishandled creation, the work of your hands.

We have come with penitent hearts to ask for your forgiveness.

Our love for material things has carried us away from your love and as a result we have not loved our neighbors.

We have come with penitent hearts to ask for you forgiveness.

We have adulterated our faith with wrong values and have not worshipped you in spirit and in truth.

Lord, forgive us and lead us to genuine repentance.

Assurance of Pardon

The good news of the gospel is this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us, Christ was raised for us, Christ rules in power for us. Whoever is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone. A new life has begun. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we are forgiven.

Thanks be to God.

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give our thanks to the Lord.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Loving God, Source of all, we thank you and praise you with our lips and in our lives that, having created us, and all things, through your Word, you welcome our prayer and praise. For the goodness of creation we praise you. For the law of holiness, inviting our obedience, and the call of prophets rebuking our disobedience, we praise you. With the faithful of every time and place, we join in this hymn of praise and thanksgiving:

We gratefully recall and remember the wonder of Jesus’ incarnation, his birth as one of us, his baptism for our sin, his compassion for our suffering, his intimacy with our frailty, his rebuke of our pride, his bearing of the cross with its death, and his rising from the tomb by the power of God. According to his commands and promise of presence, we affirm the mystery of faith.

Loving God, Creative Power, blessing your name, we seek your Spirit. Come to us and bless these gifts of bread and wine that they might be for us the body and blood of Christ, a sign and seal of our forgiveness in Christ and our adoption as children of God. As we eat and drink together, make us one with Christ and one in Christ, a sign of his eternal reign in all the world. This sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving we offer to you, loving God, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God to ages of ages.

(During this period of worship you are invited to write prayers on the cards provided. You may wish to use the prayers spoken aloud in the intervals as a guide for your written prayers.)

God be in my head, and in my understanding;

God be in my eyes, and in my looking;

God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;

God be in my heart and in my thinking;

God be at my end, and at my departing. Amen

Hymn VU117 (vs. 1) Jesus Christ is Waiting

Jesus,

Light of the minds that know you,

Life of the souls that love you,

Strength of the thoughts that seek you:

Help us to know you

That we may truly love you,

So to love you,

That we may fully serve you,

Whose service is perfect freedom. Amen

Hymn (vs. 2) Jesus Christ is Waiting

Gracious God,

We pray for your holy catholic church.

Fill it with all truth in all peace.

Where it is corrupt, purify it;

Where it is in error, direct it;

Where in any thing it is amiss, reform it.

Where it is right, strengthen it;

Where it is in want, provide for it;

Where it is divided, reunite it;

For the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our savior. Amen

Hymn (vs. 3) Jesus Christ is Waiting

Lord, open unto me

Open unto me – light for my darkness,

Open unto me – courage for my fear,

Open unto me – hope for my despair,

Open unto me – peace for my turmoil,

Open unto me – joy for my sorrow,

Open unto me – strength for my weakness,

Open unto me – wisdom for my confusion,

Open unto me – forgiveness for my sins,

Open unto me – love for my hates,

Open unto me – thy Self for my self.

Lord, Lord, open unto me! Amen

Hymn (vs. 4) Jesus Christ is Waiting

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

For all the benefits which you have won for us,

For all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.

O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,

May we know you more clearly,

Love you more dearly,

And follow you more nearly,

Day by day. Amen

Hymn (vs. 5) Jesus Christ is Waiting

(At this time we invite you to bring your prayer card to the front and hang it on the cross)

God of love,

As in Jesus Christ you gave yourself to us,

So may we give ourselves to you,

Living according to your holy will.

Keep our feet firmly in the way

Where Christ leads us;

Help our lips speak the truth

That Christ teaches us;

Fill our bodies with the life

That is Christ within us.

In his holy name we pray. Amen

*Call to Worship

We have gathered in the presence of God our creator,

who sets before us the ways of life and death.

We have gathered in the presence of Jesus the Christ,

who calls us to accept the cost of discipleship that we may know its joy.

We have gathered in the presence of the Spirit, who sustains us in trial and rejoicing.

In our living and our dying, we belong to God.

In the shadow of God’s wings, we sing for joy.

Let us worship God.

*Hymn PH#101 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

Prayer for Peace

Suffering God, from the wondrous cross light spills into our world revealing places of deepest shadow where your justice and your peace wait to be realized. In this time of Lent we are especially conscious of those living in the shadow who look to you as their hope and their salvation against the horrors this world inflicts upon them. Hear us God:

We hunger for your justice. We thirst for your peace.

In the Philippines today, O God, hear the cries of the afflicted and victims of injustice, those marginalized, the poor peasants and workers and those of our people struggling to live out their faith as your witness in spreading the good news of love and peace here on earth; uplift and comfort them and stand in protection against all the evils of this world. Always be with us in solidarity with our people as we know you are the God of history, justice and freedom. Hear us God:

We hunger for your justice. We thirst for your peace.

Alleviate your people’s suffering, Lord, we pray, but also we know that it is from these places of darkness that your justice and your peace ultimately spring. We have confidence that you are already at work and that the darkness cannot stand, but your kingdom will be established and so we have courage not only to wait and to pray, but to labor with you. Let our hands be your hands. Let our voices speak your word. Let our lives be for you and for all who suffer. Hear us as we pray:

Grant, O God, That your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart, that the barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear,

And hatreds cease, and that, with our divisions healed,

We might live in justice and peace;

Through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*Hymn Kung Pista sa Nayon ("This is Our Fiesta")

This is our fiesta! Come and see the dancers;
every dainty step that they make adds a little more as they make
tapestries of magic, movement, light, and music
Oh! What skill to keep the lamp so steady on their heads and hands.
Yes, it's wonderful, quite incredible
even when they twirl round about, not a candle falls or goes out!
Share their sense of fun, many seeming one
praise to God who shows the way with such a bright gift of dance.

2. Kung pista sa nayon ay nagsasayawan,
kumikislap ba ilawan ay parang bituing kumikinang,
sa pagsasayaw ay matatag ang ilaw
at nakangiti sila na parang walang anuman;
Tayoý magsayaw sa Diyos na mahal
nagkikislap ang ilawan sa hakbang natin ang gabay,
sa 'ting pagindak manga ilawan ay
pakaingatan na ito ay di bumagsak.

This is our fiesta! Come and see the dancers;
every twinkling trace that they leave
adds a little more as they weave
Tapestries of magic, movement, light and music;
happy faces smile and shine, feet find one rhythm for tonight (today)
Let us now join in, gladly celebrate: may the Lord inspire us to dance
give us grace to bold fast our lampos,
teach us how to pray as we leap and sway,
when we’ve caught the Spirit's flame, there is no end to the light.

*Call to Worship

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty!

Our souls yearn, even faint, for the courts of the Lord;

Our hearts and our flesh cry out for the living God.

Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself,

Where she may have her young – a place near your altar.

O Lord Almighty, our King and our God, who dwell in your house;

They are ever praising you.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.

For better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.

Let us enter the Lord’s house with praise!

*Hymn VU 389 God Is Here

Call to Confession

The proof of God’s amazing love is this: while we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. In faith and penitence, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, as people called to be your presence in the world, we search our hearts, and ask your forgiveness: for opportunities not taken, for care not give, forgive us, we pray.

For sorrow not shared, for joy not celebrated, forgive us, we pray.

For love not offered, forgiveness not extended, forgive us, we pray.

For those failings we cannot speak aloud, forgive us, we pray.

Gracious God, we seek your healing grace, and ask forgiveness in the name of Jesus. Amen

Assurance of Pardon

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Hallelujah! Amen

*Passing of the Peace

Since in Christ we are forgiven, let us forgive one another.

May the peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Scripture Reading Galatians 5:16-25

Communion Meditation “Led by the Spirit” Rev. Charles Marks

Sung Response VU#378 (vs 1) Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart

Sacrament of Holy Communion

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

May God be with you.

And also with you.

Beloved of God, lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the One who knows us and loves us.

Beloved of God, give thanks to the Lord our God.

Our praise is continually offered to our Hope, our Trust, our God.

In that time when there was only You, you walked in the midst of chaos, shaping all that is good and beautiful. In that place where there was only your Love, You stretched out your hands scooping up the dirt off earth’s floors, shaping us in your image, breathing Spirit into our lungs. In that silence where there was only your Hope, you called us to be your people, God of Glory.

But the world sang of its seduction, sin called us to follow its despair, death blinded us to the life you offered. And so, we turned away, pouting and stamping our feet wanting our own way.

But you would not pay attention to our foolish tantrums, nor would you leave us in the grasp of death and sin, trusting that if we encountered the grace wrapped in your holiness, we would turn to you in joy.

And so, believing that you have reached out and called us to service with you, and touched our lips with songs of hope, we join our voices with those who, in every time and place, sing of your ways forever:

Holy are you, Sanctuary of our Hearts, and blessed is Jesus Christ, Word of joyous grace. In that time when we had lost our way, he called to us, so we could follow him into your joy; in that time when all hope had died, he touched our souls with the fire of your love; in that time when death’s cold grip wrapped tightly around our hearts, he came to surround us with your life. While we cannot understand the mysteries of your holiness and grace, when we are called to Christ’s side we can only cry, “Here we are; we will follow” even as we hope for that faith which was his. Great is the mystery of faith:

In this time of silence, Spirit of God, may this bread which is broken, become our wholeness. In this time of grace, may this cup which is poured touch our lips with healing. In this time when we feel the brush of your fingertips caressing us, may we believe that your justice and peace are to be shared with all people; that our hearts can bear the burdens of others; that we may bring joy to the lonely and hurting. Make us compassionate people, who have a passion for your justice. Through your Son, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory are yours, Great God, our Hope, our peace, now and forever. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 54:1-10 (from the Message)

"Sing, barren woman, who has never had a baby.
Fill the air with song, you who've never experienced childbirth!
You're ending up with far more children
than all those childbearing women." God says so!
"Clear lots of ground for your tents!
Make your tents large. Spread out! Think big!
Use plenty of rope, drive the tent pegs deep.
You're going to need lots of elbow room
for your growing family.
You're going to take over whole nations;
you're going to resettle abandoned cities.
Don't be afraid—you're not going to be embarrassed.
Don't hold back—you're not going to come up short.
You'll forget all about the humiliations of your youth,
and the indignities of being a widow will fade from memory.
For your Maker is your bridegroom,

Whose name is, God-of-the-Angel-Armies!
Your Redeemer is The Holy of Israel,
known as God of the whole earth.
You were like an abandoned wife, devastated with grief,
and God welcomed you back,
Like a woman married young
and then left," says your God.

Song Renew 243 Be Not Afraid

Your Redeemer God says:

"I left you, but only for a moment.
Now, with enormous compassion, I'm bringing you back.
In an outburst of anger I turned my back on you— but only for a moment.
It's with lasting love that I'm tenderly caring for you.

"This exile is just like the days of Noah for me:
I promised then that the waters of Noah would never again flood the earth.
I'm promising now no more anger, no more dressing you down.
For even if the mountains walk away
and the hills fall to pieces,
My love won't walk away from you,
my covenant commitment of peace won't fall apart."
The God who has compassion on you says so.
